Harks listened as Rowland's teeth clash as he snapped his jaw shut, those his only intentional prey was a mouthful of trapped air.
I saw the spark of a grin an instant before he dashed off, his hooves weaving quite the interesting pattern as he covered ground. Wonder of wonders! He is alive, and has real, equine instincts! For a moment shock left my bodice immobile. Splashing me back was one thing, it was at least explainable as an act of retaliation. But to engage in a recreation such as chase or tag, well, I wasn't expecting that. But enough wasted time! He has already gotten a head start, by use of the element of surprise. My competitive mind reprimanded my legs that seemed to be frozen in place. And what was that he had said? As yes,Just try to catch me!Why, I believe he challenged you, Pandora! That's all it took. Though all these thoughts seemed to consume the time frame of eternity, in reality they only took a few moments.
Shifting my weight to my hind legs, I pushed off. Muscles rippled throughout my draft-like body as feathered hooves pounded against the earth in hot pursuit. Dang he's fast.
I wouldn't call myself rapid. Not that my pace is slow...Given my heavy body, I am rather quick. But sprinting is not my game. I am an endurance runner, which, in my opinion, is better. For everything will eventually tire, and must halt for a rest. I continued at a relentless, steady pace. Just quick enough to keep him in view, but not enough to cause my sides to heave, or my breathing to become uneven. I admit, I was a little stunned by his path. It was wild, and a bit on the reckless side. Totally out of character from what I had seen from him as of yet. But perhaps he only shows part of his traits at certain times? Too bad he's not more like this all the time. Maybe then he wouldn't make such infuriating company.
I allowed a portion of my attention to wander about my surroundings. Dodging trees was fun. I saw a few squirrels grow wide eyed as I galloped past, just about running them over as they went about preforming their dreary rituals of their meaningless little lives. A flock of birds rose up before me, and I ran through a flurry of fluttering wings. I gave a few sudden tosses of my head, sending my mane flying in the wind. I was starting to forget about why I was running, and that I had a stallion to catch. I devoted a bit of my energy to some sharp bucks, kicking my hooves out and skyward. Then my thoughts reminded me of the purpose of my run, and I looked for Rowland. He wasn't very far ahead now. With a loud whinny I charged on, breaking my pace, and speeding up a little. Now to go in for the kill I chuckled. "Guess who!" I said as I extended my neck and took a bite at his rump. "Thought you could get rid of me so easily?" With a glimmer in my eye, I reared, ready for more. The question was, how much more could he take?
